Even though it only takes an hour and a half to fly from Boston to New York, when you factor in the time it takes to get to the airport, go through security, and wait to board, taking the train from Boston to New York can actually be faster. Especially if you take the Acela Express train which makes the journey in 3 hours and 25 minutes.

But the amount of hassle you’ll save is even more compelling. When you travel by train, there’s no taking off your shoes and taking out your laptop for security, no seatback crammed against your knees, and no scrambling to find overhead space for your carry-on. With 42” seat pitch, you’ll hardly know there’s anyone in front of or behind you.

If you’re traveling on business, you’ll actually be able to get some work done. And if you’re traveling for pleasure, you’ll be able to enjoy the some scenery of the New England coast. Best of all, you’ll be able to stretch your legs whenever you like.

Acela, which was America’s first high-speed train, celebrated its tenth anniversary in December of 2010. On straight stretches of track, it travels at speeds up to 150 MPH. Even so, travel by train is greener than flying or driving.

You can catch the train at either Boston’s South Station in the heart of the Financial District or at Back Bay Station, and you’ll disembark in New York at Penn Station. During peak times, there are express trains from Boston to New York every hour. If you need to be in New York at a specific time, it’s a good idea to purchase your tickets as far in advance as you can. Buying them ahead of time may also save you some money.

Three classes of service are available: coach, business, and first. All seats have electrical outlets so you can plug in your laptop or DVD player. And WiFi Internet access is available. A Café car has beverages, sandwiches, and snacks. And fold-out tables are big enough to work comfortably.

First class passengers have access to ClubAcela, where you can relax, host a meeting, or enjoy a complimentary snack. Onboard, First Class attendants provide food and beverage service to you – on real china – at your seat. The big, comfy seats have adjustable foot rests, lumbar support, and head rests. And there’s plenty of space to stow your luggage.

Fares vary according to departure time and date. But as a rule, they compete favorably with airfares. Discounts are available for seniors, students, and AAA members.
